ELDR group set up to find ways to combat climate change

A newly formed ELDR (European Liberal Democrats) climate change working group will be meeting for the first time on 11 September at the ELDR Party's headquarters in Brussels. The group meeting, entitled 'A Cross-Sector Approach to Tackling Climate Change', will be chaired by Lord Teverson, the UK's Liberal Democrat spokesperson for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and includes liberal MEPs and MPs from across the European Union. MEPs include Lena Ek, the Alliance of Liberal and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) coordinator in the European Parliament's committee on climate change. She will talk about what the EU can do as a global leader in the fight against climate change, especially given that the Kyoto protocol is due to expire in 2012. New PPC selected for Hitchin & Harpenden

Hitchin & Harpenden Liberal Democrats are pleased to announce the selection of Nigel Quinton as their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate at the next general election - which could be as soon as October. Nigel has very strong links locally, having worked in Harpenden since 1988, and lived in Markyate, St Albans and now Lemsford.

Ward Councillor judges Scarecrow Festival

In September the village of Fornham All Saints held its Scarecrow Festival. The whole community takes part and it was a great honour to be asked to judge the scarecrows. It took me four hours to walk through the village judging all the scarecrows that had been made, and it was a very difficult choice. The evening was the highlight with many villagers sitting on the village green for drinks and a meal while being entertained with music.
