New Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has described education as his "biggest enthusiasm" in politics. He said the UK could look at some of the best practice in Europe for running its education system. These should be any method that "unlocks aspiration, unlocks the potential of children". He told Radio 4's Today programme: "We could look at some of the best practice elsewhere in Europe. "I think the fact we are now condemning, still, despite all the investment from New Labour, thousands and thousands of children who are born into a lifetime of poverty where their education doesn't seem to shift that in any way, I think is an absolute indictment of the way things have been run."
An innocent plea for a bigger Christmas tree led to Rochdale MP Paul Rowen presenting Rochdale School's Music Service with a full size tree. Mr Rowen reacted after former Rochdale 'Man of the Year' Ken Davies complained whilst compering the Music Service's annual 'Christmas Cracker' at the Gracie Fields Theatre about the size of the Christmas tree.

Bedfordshire County Council has dealt a blow to thousands of recyclers across Bedford Borough by deciding to take away their orange recycling bags. Having up to now provided the bags for recycling and garden waste, the County has decided that it will no longer provide the bags because of the cost. They want to force people to use bins instead, a move which may remove thousands of people from the recycling scheme at a stroke with many residents unable to store another wheelie bin in addition to their black bin.
David Cameron suffered embarrassment yesterday after it emerged that his local Conservative Party was forced to forfeit donations totalling £7,400. Witney Conservative Association had to give up a donation of £5,900 after failing to make basic checks that would have shown that the donor was not entitled to vote in a British election and so not entitled to make a political donation. A second donation, worth £1,500, from a supporter in London who was not on the electoral roll and therefore impermissible as a donor, was also surrendered.
