Bush is like an ostrich over Iraq says Campbell

Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Menzies Campbell as likened George Bush to an ostrich in his stance over Iraq. In a joint press conference with Tony Blair, President Bush yesterday ruled out early talks with Iran and Syria on tackling Iraq's unrest, a move called as part of a change in strategy on Iraq by a damning US report.

Farron launches inquiry into adult education cuts

Local MP Tim Farron has begun a consultation with the adult education centres in Westmorland and Lonsdale, with the aim of finding out how funding cuts made by the Learning and Skills Council have affected them. It has now been a year since the introduction of changes in LSC funding that led to a reduction in support for many adult education courses.

Suffolk: Liberal Democrats condemn Tory refusal to protect rights of local people

At today's Full Council meeting of Suffolk County Council, Councillors debated a Liberal Democrat motion which called for the county council to protect the rights of local people to question the need for and locality of nuclear power stations. This is the same right that our community enjoys with regard to any other large-scale development. This has been put under threat by the Governments recent consultation on New Nuclear Build, which proposes to take away these rights and aims to have key decisions made in Whitehall without public consultation.

Adoption victory in Scotland

The Scottish Parliament yesterday overwhelmingly backed a new law giving same-sex couples the legal right to adopt children. The Adoption and Children (Scotland) Bill is designed to reverse the decline in numbers offering to adopt and drew huge cross-party support. An amendment from SNP member Roseanna Cunningham to exempt same-sex couples was defeated by 98 votes to 11.
