Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperson, Nick Clegg has question the Home Office's claims that UK's national identity card scheme will cost £5.4bn to set up and run. Mr. Clegg said "It is difficult to believe anything the Government says about the cost of ID cards given that in the past they have either tried to hide the costs or spectacularly underestimated them. Given the Government's abysmal record on IT projects, such as the massive cost overruns on the NHS computer system, the public has every right to maintain a healthy scepticism about this figure. Identity cards will be expensive and unworkable."
Bedford Borough Liberal Democrat Councillors have expressed their shock and dismay at the announcement of further cuts amidst the deepening financial crisis at Bedford Hospital. A series of cutbacks in the current financial year will include the closure of a further 34 beds by December, while the hospital's financial deficit could grow to a massive £16.9 million.
The green credentials of Conservatives in Essex were found wanting today (10 October) after they initially refused to accept a motion calling on the council to sign the Nottingham Declaration which commits the council to action on climate change. At Thursday's meeting of Guildford Borough Council, senior Lib Dem Onslow councillor Tony Phillips will call on the council to use its influence to mobilise all sectors of the local community to campaign against any possible cuts in NHS provision or closure of the Royal Surrey County Hospital.
