Disabled hate crime law planned

Inciting hatred against disabled people is to be outlawed under government plans outlined in the Queen's Speech. It will be added to proposals announced last month to make it a crime to incite hatred against gay, lesbian and trans gender people.

Tesco pulls out of charity scheme

Supermarket firm Tesco has decided to stop its work with a charity which delivers shopping to the elderly and disabled in south west Scotland. It used to prepare bags of groceries which the Food Train service then distributed in and around Stranraer.

Hospital sued over disabled arm

The parents of a 13-year-old girl who was disabled following alleged hospital errors at her birth, have launched a High Court fight for compensation. Harriet Frobisher, from Prestatyn, Denbighshire, suffers from Erb's Palsy, limiting the use of her right arm.

Holmes Calls for an End to Child Poverty

Paul Holmes MP today as a part of End Child Poverty month joined Save the Children, Shelter and the End Child Poverty coalition on a march on the Treasury to press for the end to child poverty. Paul launched the national campaign in Chesterfield at the Unemployed Workers Centre on October 19th.

Letter from Parliament

The media is at its best when it is in investigative mode - Would President Nixon ever have been impeached and Watergate uncovered had not the Washington Post published the story? At the moment I'm speaking to a journalist on a national newspaper about what happens to women of arranged marriages when the marriage fails. Foreign born nationals cannot easily get help yet many cannot return home. Research carried out for me recently has shown that up to 17 women in Rochdale could be sleeping rough. For humanitarian reasons alone we should be helping these women. I hope that by publishing their plight (and I do not believe Rochdale is alone in having this problem) we can get help and assistance for these women.
