Lib Dems welcome U-Turn on Library Closures

The Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Surrey County Council, Cllr Hazel Watson, has welcomed the abandonment of plans to close four libraries in Surrey. She said: "I am pleased that proposals to close the libraries in Hersham, Caterham Hill, Ewell Court and New Haw are to be abandoned. However, it is regrettable that the libraries in Bagshot and Virginia Water are still under threat."

Ewell Court saved in County Library U-Turn

News that the future of the Library at Ewell Court House is secure was welcomed today by Cllr Nigel Pavey, who is treasurer of the Friends of Ewell Court Library. He said: "Those who worked so hard arranging a meeting with the Libraries chief and organising the petition against closure are to be congratulated. Everyone who uses the library will feel so relieved to know that this important community facility has been reprieved."

Labour in Sleaze row

Labour has admitting they received loans from millionaire supporters who were then recommended for peerages. The controversy arose after it emerged that three businessmen at the centre of a row between Downing Street and the watchdog on Lords appointments had all made loans to the Labour party, reportedly worth more than £3.5m.

New figures released today by the Liberal Democrats show massive discrepancies in transport investment per person between English local authorities. Twenty-one authorities have received less than £150 per resident to invest in transport improvements over the last eight years.
